Assistant Professor in Management Accounting
Fulltime, 40 hours/week
Starting September 01, 2026, and limited for 6 years
 
A qualification agreement will be concluded at the start of the employment (§ 27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement). Pursuant to WU’s Personnel Development Plan, this position can only be fixed-term for up to six years. Once all objectives agreed upon in the qualification agreement have been fulfilled, the employment relationship can be made permanent. Employees who have successfully completed a qualification agreement are classified as associate professors. From an organizational regulation perspective they belong to the group of professors. Three years after successful completion of the qualification agreement, they are entitled to apply for promotion to full professor according to the By-Laws of WU § 43a.
 

The Management Accounting Group at WU Vienna’s Department of Strategy and Innovation is currently inviting applications for an Assistant Professor in Management Accounting, tenure track (qualification agreement), full-time, 40 hours/week, starting September 2026, to join our interdisciplinary department. We are looking for a candidate who conducts high quality research in the field of management accounting (management control or corporate governance) using quantitative methods (i.e., archival, experimental, or survey) with the potential to publish in the top-tier accounting journals. The candidate is expected to work on her*his own research projects and co-operate with our interdisciplinary faculty and PhD-Students. Next to the research, the candidate will design and teach courses in management accounting and related areas in the bachelor, master, and PhD programs at WU Vienna, and engage in the institute’s third mission activities.

Our group has a long-standing tradition and excellent reputation in the international academic community and business practice. Our diverse team consists of senior and junior colleagues bringing together international and local expertise. We engage in various third mission activities, such as conducting company projects and organizing conferences and events, where we bring together international researchers, high profile practitioners, and ambitious students. Our expertise is at the intersection of management accounting, general management, and strategy. Typical topics that we examine are:

  • Management Control Systems and Corporate Governance
  • Managing Creativity and Innovation
  • Performance Evaluation
  • Target setting, forecasting, and predictive analytics
  • Internal Control
  • Whistleblowing 
  • Risk Management
  • Purposeful organizations: Corporate purpose and CSR
  • The new work context (e.g., part-time work, telecommuting…)
  • Data analytics and the interaction of humans and machines

In our research we use different quantitative methods, such as field- and laboratory experiments, archival data, and surveys. Our teaching ranges from large scale introductory courses, to small scale interactive project courses.

The Management Accounting group is embedded in the interdisciplinary department for Strategy and Innovation, combining the fields of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Decision Sciences, and Management Accounting. The successful candidate is invited to engage with all scholars in our department to cut across into the diverse areas of the department and foster our interdisciplinary exchange.

What you have to offer

  • A finished (or close to finishing soon) PhD in Accounting or related fields such as Economics, Management or Finance; 
  • Candidates can be in the last phase of their PhD, have recently finished their PhD, or already have some experience as Assistant Professors/Post docs.
  • Candidates who completed their PhD/doctoral degree at WU Vienna must present proof that they have completed an uninterrupted employment period at a postdoc/Assistant Professor level of at least two years (with a minimum of 20h/week employment) at another university or non-academic research institution, without simultaneous employment at WU.
  • Research expertise and clear research agenda in Management Accounting, Control or Corporate Governance proven through papers published in high quality journals or high quality working papers (e.g., presented at conferences, papers in the review process…).
  • Strong expertise in quantitative research methods (i.e., archival data, experiments, or surveys)
  • Active involvement in the international academic community;
  • Proven international academic experience is preferred (i.e. a PhD from a non-Austrian university or at least three years of academic work experience as a post-doctoral researcher outside of Austria) 
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, preferably in management accounting or corporate governance
  • Ability to teach in English language (German is a plus, but not required) 
  • Ability to design and coordinate projects 
  • Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You are prepared to use multimedia teaching and learning formats.
  • High ambition and motivation for an international academic career 
  • Ability to work independently, but also being a good teamplayer!
