Institute for Social Change and Sustainability
Part-time, 16 hours/week
Starting April 01, 2026, for the duration of a part-time employment pursuant to the Maternity Protection Act 
 
The position is open to social scientists with an ambitious and innovative research agenda fitting the profile of the IGN, and enthusiasm for teamwork and teaching. 

What to expect

  • Being part of a lively, internationally active research culture and community
  • Pursuing an ambitious publication agenda within the institute’s core research area
  • Providing high-quality teaching on bachelor and master levels (approx. 2 courses per semester
  • Contributing to the management of the institute and its various conferences and activities
  • Representing the institute in third mission activities, media outreach and expert talks
  • Contributing to ongoing and acquiring new externally funded research projects

What you have to offer

  • Very good university degree in a relevant social science discipline (sociology, political science, human geography, socioeconomics, etc.)
  • PhD in a relevant social science discipline, completed or very close to completion.
  • Publications in national and international, peer reviewed academic journals
  • Experience in co-authoring academic publications
  • Academic expertise in one or more of the following areas: environmental and political sociology, sustainability research, transformation research, social movement studies, social theory, political theory, democratic theory related to countries formerly described as “Western” societies
  • Experience in applying for and acquiring grants for research projects and/or scholarships
  • Experience as researcher contributing to externally funded research projects
  • Demonstrable interest in and familiarity with the research and teaching agenda of the institute
  • Experience in academic teaching in fields relevant to the IGN
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, motivation and reliability
  • The capacity for structured independent work
  • Experience in dealing with NGOs, social movements and other political actors
  • Proficiency in the German language is required
