Department of Information Systems and Operations Management
Part-time, 20 hours/week
Starting September 01, 2025, and ending after 3 years
Do you want to support the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management in the selection, planning, maintenance and expansion of the required IT infrastructure for research and teaching?
In this key role, you will take on responsibilities to administer IT aspects of research and research-led teaching on topics related to computational social science, process science, and computationally-intensive theorizing. You will be part of a dynamic and international team at the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management.
What to expect
- Supporting with hardware and software:
- Hardware: You will support the selection, planning, procurement and maintenance of specific and complex computer equipment and hardware for research and teaching purposes.
- Software: You will support the procurement, configuration, adaptation and implementation of research applications and system software. - Supporting scientific staff: You will support researchers in IT-related questions, extract and prepare digital data from various systems (e.g., workflow systems, such as ERP) or platforms (e.g., social media platforms or collaboration platforms, such as GitHub). You will be involved in the analysis and visualization of such data.
- Administrating databases and ensuring network security: You will administer databases for research and teaching applications and support in ensuring network and data security. You will play an important role in ensuring functionality and performance of the institute and department infrastructures.
- General research support: You will assist research activities under supervision, for example by supporting the evaluation and testing of research set-ups (hardware & software) and in conducting ongoing studies (e.g., experiments) on dedicated hardware in close cooperation with scientific staff.
What you have to offer
- Education and previous experience: You have completed school education in a field related to computer science or economics or can demonstrate initial professional experience as a system manager or system administrator and have a keen interest in research.
- Software and system knowledge: You have knowledge of different operating systems, system software and application software (big data analysis etc.), as well as good knowledge of hardware.
- Programming Skills: You are able to develop software code, for instance, to develop algorithms for data analysis (e.g., Python or Java). You are able to extend open source software code (e.g., algorithms published in scientific studies), and have initial experience with software and code versioning development practices (testing, continuous integration and version control, e.g. using platforms such as GitHub).
- Willingness to learn technical and professional skills: You are prepared to quickly and independently familiarize yourself with new software tools and operating systems on various platforms. In addition, you are willing to develop a basic understanding of the research area (e.g., collaboration, work-related routines) in which the professional software is used.
- Server- und Container-Administration: You can maintain virtual machine environments (e.g. Linux, Kubernetes, user management, etc.) that drive various of our computationally intensive experiments. If you do not yet have this experience, you are ready to acquire such knowledge quickly in collaboration with experienced team members.
- Language skills and good communication: You have a good command of written and spoken English. Some working knowledge of German is an advantage. In addition, you have good communication and mediation skills and can present problems and effectively explain solutions to colleagues who are not professional programmers or software engineers.
- Self-reliant team player: You not only enjoy working collegially in a team and use your ability to cooperate, but at the same time you also act independently and on your own initiative. In addition, you are reliable, precise and use your structured and analytical thinking skills.
Note: The working language of the research groups at the department is mostly English, and the interviews will be in English. You are welcome to send the application materials in English or German.

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €1,375.75 (14 times per year). This salary may be adjusted based on job-related prior work experience. In addition, we offer a wide range of attractive social benefits.
