Institute for Marketing Management
Part-time, 30 hours/week
Starting September 01, 2026 or October 2026, and ending after 6 years

This position opens doors to an academic career or a later switch to a career in business for a self-motivated, passionate researcher and team player, who wants to make a significant contribution to the Institute’s agendas.

The Institute for Marketing Management is part of the Marketing Department at WU Vienna. Our research aims to contribute to pushing the frontiers of marketing knowledge. Our research is rooted in marketing’s core topics, including product and brand management, creativity and new product development, and consumer behavior, and has been published in the field’s top journals.

What to expect

We are looking for a candidate who is interested in pursuing an academic career in marketing. The responsibilities of the successful candidate span research, teaching, and administrative tasks.

  • Writing a dissertation: You will investigate your research topic and spend a third of your working hours writing your dissertation in the field of marketing management or consumer behavior. You will primarily use experimental research methods. Supported by experienced researchers and with ample opportunities to connect with the international research community, you will aim to publish in top-tier peer-reviewed journals in marketing. Possible topics include the intersection of sustainability and consumer behavior, though you are welcome to pursue your own research interests.
  • Building research skills: You will develop your research skills beyond your dissertation through coursework, self-study, conference visits, and active engagement in the Department’s research seminars and research activities.
  • Teaching and teaching support: You will teach courses at bachelor’s level, including method-focused courses (e.g., marketing research methods) and applied formats (e.g., marketing consulting project), starting after the second semester of your employment. You will also support student projects in cooperation with practice.
  • Student support: You will serve as a co-advisor for bachelor and master theses and help with administrative tasks to support the successful teaching activities.
  • Organizational and administrative support: You will support administrative tasks related to research, teaching, and self-governance (e.g., coordination of the experimental lab).
  • Building a personal network: You will use the pre-doctoral phase to create your own professional network for the future.

What you have to offer

  • Academic degree: We are looking for applicants with a master’s degree (MSc or equivalent, completed by August 2026) in business, or any related discipline that provides a solid methodological and theoretical grounding for conducting research in marketing or consumer behavior (e.g., communication studies/media, social psychology, economics, sociology) and that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral program at WU.
  • Strong academic record: You have excellent study results. Advanced knowledge in marketing is desirable but can be acquired in the role by attending additional courses.
  • Research skills: You already have basic knowledge in experimentation and are interested in further developing your experimental research skills. Knowledge of other quantitative methods is desirable (e.g., survey design, secondary data analysis). You are comfortable working with standard data analysis tools (e.g. R, SPSS).
  • Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You are prepared to use multimedia teaching and learning formats. Prior teaching experience such as tutoring is desirable but not required.
  • Communication skills: Excellent English skills, written and spoken, are expected. Proficiency in German is not required but will be considered a plus.
  • Working style: You are strongly motivated to complete a PhD dissertation and publish in top-tier academic journals in marketing. You work independently, show initiative, are willing to take on responsibility, organize yourself effectively, and are a team player.

Applicants are required to upload their CV (incl. degree and a brief statement of their research interests) and a motivation letter. If you have already completed your MSc thesis, please attach it to your application. Contact for further questions: ulrike.kaiser@wu.ac.at
