Institute for Data, Energy, and Sustainability

Please note that pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, only students who have not yet completed a master or diploma degree program can be employed.
We are looking for someone to join us at the Institute for Data, Energy, and Sustainability (IDEaS), supported by the BMIMI Endowed Professorship for Data-driven Knowledge Generation: Climate Action. Our mission is centered around exploring the role of innovation and technological change in understanding, measuring, or shaping digital and green energy transitions. We focus on the security, reliability, affordability, and equity of energy transitions, and their impact on climate change and broader sustainability objectives.
Our approach is grounded in data-driven and evidence-based research. We are committed to informing decision-making in government, business, and society by leveraging emerging data sources and combining them with advanced data science and systems modeling techniques. Through these methods, we tackle multifaceted questions that traditional research methodologies may not fully address.
We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual who desires to support us in our daily teaching and research work. You will join an interdisciplinary, international team of academics aspiring to the highest standards of research and teaching. We also actively help to learn new technologies and gain experience in the field of energy, climate, and data science.
What to expect
- Research and Teaching: You support the preparation of slides and summary reports for teaching and research, as well as assist in preparing and executing assignments/exams. You apply online teaching tools and draft concise summaries, briefs, and overviews of research insights (based on literature review).
- Data and Code: You assist with web scraping, data collection (automatic/manual), data harmonizing, and integrating data from various sources while maintaining data interoperability. You also assist with regular data backups/versioning, metadata creation, and maintain dataset documentation and contribute to the development and implementation of data and code management plans, compliant with ethical standards and data governance policies.
- Analysis and Tools: You perform basic quantitative analyses using R, Python, or similar tools and support more advanced analytical tasks depending on your skills and experience.
What you have to offer
- Academic degree: You are enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program with at least two semesters remaining before graduation and have a strong academic performance, ideally in information systems, data science, or a related field.
- Organizational and Communication Skills:
- Ability to structure and manage tasks independently and efficiently
- Proactive, reliable, and open to feedback
- High attention to detail
- Strong skills in summarizing academic literature and communicating research insights clearly (e.g., through reports, briefs, or presentations)
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
- Technical and Analytical Skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office, especially PowerPoint and Word, for preparing teaching and presentation materials
- Basic experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Python or R)
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn tools such as LaTeX, Git, and Jupyter Notebooks
- Interest inreproducible research practices and data/code documentation
- Data Ecosystem Awareness (are a plus): You have a understanding of data lifecycle management, including data collection, cleaning, integration, and storage as well as awareness of metadata standards, data interoperability, and ethical data use. Interest in or experience with data governance, open data principles, or FAIR data practices
- Domain Knowledge: a good understanding, or an interest to learn topics related to climate, energy, or environmental sustainability is a strong advantage.

The monthly gross salary amounts to €1,349.60.
