Institute for Distributed Ledgers and Token Economy
Part-time, 30 hours/week
Starting August 01, 2024, and ending after 1 year

You want to deepen your interest in your research topic while gaining your first teaching experience? In this position you will pursue the Ph.D. Program at the WU Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, and work at the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics (https://www.wu.ac.at/en/cryptoeconomics) led by Prof. Alfred Taudes. This call is open to highly motivated researchers with a master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, economics, engineering, physics, mathematics, or related disciplines.

What to expect

  • Writing a dissertation: You will be investigating your research topic and spending a third of your working hours on writing your dissertation in crypto-economics, and related areas.
  • Independent and collaborative research: You will be supporting publishing activities, conducting surveys, and carrying out research of practical relevance. Based on your academic and technical strengths and interests, your research will fall into the broad category Crypto-economics
  • Teaching and teaching support: You will be planning and teaching courses, providing support for exams, and conduct exams yourself.
  • Organizational and administrative support: You will be organizing and evaluating teaching activities, planning exams, keeping the budget in mind, supporting the organization of scientific workshops and conferences and events for practitioners and acquiring third-party funding.

What you have to offer

We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a solid academic record. The ideal candidate should have:
  • Academic degree: You have a diploma/master’s degree in in computer science, economics, engineering, physics, mathematics, or related disciplines that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral program at WU.
  • Demonstrated ability and interest to produce high-quality research results
  • Strong technical skills and background knowledge in Blockchain technology (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
  • Strong quantitative skills, including at least one of the following:
    - Data science, including social networks data processing
    - Machine learning, including deep learning and reinforcement learning
    - Mathematical modeling (e.g., game theory or evolutionary dynamics)
  • Demonstrated understanding and use of advanced statistical inference
  • Expertise in at least one programming language for Blockchain development or data analytics, such as Python, R, Solidity, etc.
  • High proficiency in English and academic writing
  • Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You are prepared to use multimedia teaching and learning formats.
Research interest in Blockchain technology and crypto-economics is a prerequisite. If you are an exceptional candidate who lacks the necessary background but has strong interest and ability to quickly catch up, you are encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration. Preference will be given to candidates who possess statistical maturity and the ability to identify and avoid replication and generalization problems.

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €2,684.10 (14 times per year). This salary may be adjusted based on job-related prior work experience. In addition, we offer a wide range of attractive social benefits.
